What visiting Copenhagen to Malmo Day Trip is really like

You cross the Öresund with the water on both sides and Sweden arriving as a low green line, and by the time you reach Lund the towers are already visible above the rooftops.

Read more Show less

Aim to arrive between 09:30 and 12:00 — the recommended window on any copenhagen to malmo day trip, chosen so you miss the mid-day crowds and reach the north transept before the astronomical clock performs at noon.

You push open the cathedral door at Kyrkogatan 6 and the temperature drops several degrees. You walk the nave first, letting your eyes adjust to sandstone light. Then you descend to the crypt, where the columns are thick and close and one of them is wrapped by the carved figure of the giant Finn. You come back up, find a place near the clock, and wait. The mechanism stirs, trumpeters sound, and the wooden Magi process past the Virgin. It takes a few minutes. Nobody talks through it.

Afterwards you step out into Kyrkogatan and the town is still small around you. You wander toward Lundagård's chestnut trees, then back toward the station. Whether your copenhagen to malmo trip continues to Malmöhus Castle or ends with the train back over the bridge, you leave having paid nothing at the door — entry is 0 SEK (Free entry) — and having stood inside a building consecrated in 1145.

Copenhagen to Malmo Day Trip Across the Oresund

A copenhagen to malmo day trip crosses the Oresund Bridge into Skåne, pairing Malmö's Turning Torso skyline and cobbled Lilla Torg with the sandstone cathedral and university quarter of nearby Lund. Guides cover both Swedish cities in one loop, and copenhagen to malmo day trip tickets include the bridge transfer, so no separate Skånetrafiken fare is needed. Small groups keep the walking sections through Gamla Staden and Kungsparken relaxed rather than rushed.

The Öresund Bridge carries traffic for 7,845 metres before disappearing into an artificial island and continuing underwater as a tunnel — a design choice made so aircraft approaching Copenhagen Airport would never fly over a cable-stayed span.

That engineering compromise, opened in 2000, is what turned two national capitals of trade into a single commuting region and made the copenhagen to malmo day trip an ordinary act rather than an expedition.

Malmö sits on the Swedish shore as the country's third city, shaped by Danish rule until 1658 and by shipbuilding until the Kockums crane was dismantled and sold in 2002. Lund, eighteen kilometres inland, is older and quieter: a cathedral town whose university was founded in 1666 and whose street grid still follows medieval property lines. Travellers weighing whether Malmo is worth visiting from Copenhagen usually find their answer in the contrast between the two.

Lund Cathedral, at Kyrkogatan 6, is the reason most itineraries turn inland. Consecrated in 1145, it is the oldest surviving Romanesque cathedral in Scandinavia, built in sandstone quarried in Höör and raised when Lund was the archiepiscopal seat for the whole Nordic church. Its twin western towers, added during Carl Georg Brunius's nineteenth-century restoration, dominate a skyline otherwise made of low brick. Below the nave lies a crypt of squat, spiralled columns — among the finest Romanesque interiors in northern Europe. In the north transept stands the astronomical clock, the Horologium mirabile Lundense, assembled around 1425, dismantled in 1837, and reassembled in 1923. Entry is 0 SEK (Free entry), which is unusual for a monument of this rank and worth stating plainly.

What makes a copenhagen to malmo tour cohere is the density of these things within a small radius. Malmö offers Stortorget, Lilla Torg, Malmöhus Castle and the twisting Turning Torso; Lund offers the cathedral, the botanical garden and Kulturen's open-air museum. A copenhagen to malmo day tour that includes both cities covers roughly 1,200 years of Scanian history without a single long transfer, and travellers who ask whether they can travel from Copenhagen to Malmo discover that the border is a passport check at most.

The copenhagen to malmo day trip endures because it rewards modest ambition. Nobody needs to see everything. The point is the crossing itself, and what waits on the far side.

The story

Historical Significance on Your Copenhagen to Malmo Day Trip

Lund Cathedral was consecrated in 1145 under Archbishop Eskil, though building had begun decades earlier. Its founding purpose was political as much as spiritual. In 1103 or 1104, the papacy raised Lund to an archbishopric, severing Nordic Christianity from the German see of Hamburg-Bremen. For four centuries the archbishop here held authority over Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Iceland, Greenland, and the Faroes. Visitors on a copenhagen to malmo day trip stand inside what was once the ecclesiastical capital of the whole North. The fabric is Romanesque and largely sandstone, quarried and worked by masons trained in the Rhineland and Lombardy. The crypt, consecrated in 1123, remains the most complete surviving element: a forest of stubby columns, two of them carved with the figures known as Finn the Giant and his wife. The apse, the twin western towers, and the round-arched arcading belong to the same disciplined idiom. Erosion and a nineteenth-century restoration under Helgo Zettervall reshaped much of the exterior between 1860 and 1880; Zettervall's alterations were contested then and remain so, since he replaced weathered medieval stonework rather than conserving it. Guided Lund cathedral tours generally begin below ground, where the original masonry is untouched. The astronomical clock, the Horologium mirabile Lundense, was built around 1425 and is the object most travellers come to see. It tracks the movement of sun and moon through the zodiac, computes the date of Easter, and drives a calendar disc valid for centuries. Dismantled in 1837 and stored in pieces, it was reconstructed and returned to service in 1923. Twice daily its trumpeters sound, the Three Kings process before the Virgin, and the medieval hymn In dulci jubilo plays on wooden pipes. Those booking copenhagen to malmo day trip tickets should note the noon performance in particular. What survives is a working church rather than a museum piece. Domkyrkan i Lund still holds daily services beneath twelfth-century vaults. Many copenhagen to malmo day trip tours pair it with Malmö's Stortorget, but the cathedral rewards unhurried attention on its own terms, and any well-planned copenhagen to malmo day trip tour should allow for that.

Bridge crossing was the highlight

We booked a copenhagen to malmo day trip mostly for the Öresund Bridge and it delivered — thirty-five minutes from Central Station and the water goes from grey to turquoise as you climb the span. Malmö felt immediately different, lower rooflines and wider sky than Denmark. Bring your passport, the ID check on the return leg was quick but they did look.

Two cities, one ticket

Doing Malmö and Lund together worked better than I expected because the regional train between them takes about twelve minutes. Lund Cathedral was cool and dim inside after the heat outside, and the astronomical clock crowd was surprisingly small on a Tuesday. Our guide's Skåne history stories were better than any audio guide.

Windy on the strait

Good value overall, though the wind coming off the Öresund in May cut straight through my jacket — layers, even in spring. Lilla Torg was full of people drinking coffee in the sun and it was easy to lose an hour there. The only downside was that the Malmö portion felt slightly rushed compared to Lund.

Turning Torso and old town

The contrast between the medieval streets around Stortorget and the Västra Hamnen waterfront is what makes this worth doing. We walked out to the sea deck near the Turning Torso and the light at seven in the evening was very soft. Sweden crossing tours like this one give you enough time to see both sides of the city.

Easy and well organised

Everything ran to the minute, which matters when your day depends on regional trains. Malmöhus Castle grounds were quiet and green, and the moat path made a nice loop before we headed to Lund. Would recommend a copenhagen to malmo day trip to anyone with a spare day in Denmark who wants a second country stamped into the itinerary.

Cold day, warm cafés

We went in early March and it was properly cold, but ducking into a café off Lilla Torg for cinnamon buns fixed that. The Öresund crossing in flat winter light had its own kind of beauty, all silver water and wind turbines. Copenhagen to Malmo day trip tickets were straightforward to sort out in advance and we never queued.

Lund exceeded expectations

Honestly I came for Malmö and left more impressed by Lund — the university quarter, the botanical garden gates, the cobbled lanes behind the cathedral. Our small group stayed together well and nobody felt herded. The Skåne region genuinely feels distinct from the rest of Sweden.

Good in the off season

November light in southern Sweden is short but very pretty, low gold by two in the afternoon. Malmö's Old Town was almost empty and we had the Stortorget square practically to ourselves. Öresund crossing tours run year round and I'd argue the quieter months are better.

Solid but bring water

The summer heat surprised me and there wasn't much shade around the harbour walk. Still, seeing the Turning Torso up close and then the medieval core of Lund in the same afternoon is a lot of variety for one day. A copenhagen to malmo day trip tour is a good use of your time if you've already done the main Copenhagen landmarks.

Worth the early start

The 8am departure felt brutal but it meant arriving in Malmö before the shops opened and the city was still waking up. Copenhagen to malmo day trip tours seem to be popular for good reason — you cover a bridge, two cities and a border without ever needing a car. The cathedral crypt in Lund with its thick stone columns was the image that stayed with me.
